SUBJECT: Wildcat E-News - October 5

Woodrow Wilson High School Wildcat News
October 5, 2020
MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL MORAN

Wildcat Families:

Our freshmen have been amazing this week. We were able to have 100% of students in dress code, carrying the correct bag, and following the correct pathways throughout the building. A new expectation starting next week is that all students start each class on Zoom with their teacher and classmates for at least the first 10 minutes. If a student must participate asynchronously and will not be in attendance, then they should be proactive and contact the teacher through the preferred mode of communications to let them know when and how they will be participating.

Here is a summary of reminders of the information that has been in student announcements all week:

  • Students last names A-L attend Monday/Tuesday and last names M-Z attend Thursday/Friday.
  • Have a fever or showing COVID symptoms? Stay home. Contact your teachers and attendance office.
  • Follow the dress code and wear an acceptable mask.
  • After entry and breakfast in the designated area, students will report to their Self-Management of Learning (1A/B) period to pick up Woodrow masks, sanitizer, and an optional face shield.
  • You may bring a lunch to eat in an approved area. We are unable to share microwaves. Food deliveries will not be permitted. Leaving campus for lunch is not allowed. All students are provided lunch for no cost.
  • Arrive early. Doors open at 8:30 a.m. Each grade has a specific entrance. Students are expected to be in class by 9 a.m.
  • Bring headphones, charged computer, and charger in a clear or mesh bag.
  • School ends at 4:35 p.m. Please make plans to leave campus unless in a supervised practice.

I know there are a lot of questions about what instruction will look like when students return. We are calling this "concurrent" or "simultaneous" learning because teachers will be teaching students simultaneously in-person and participating remotely. This is an incredibly complex task that none of us has done routinely and there is very little research on this type of instruction. We are committed to figuring this out and being the exemplary school for teaching and learning.

If you would like to read more about this process, here is an article about Asynchronous vs. Synchronous Learning and The Concurrent Classroom. You will see some variances depending on what is best for a program, content, grade level, and balance of in-person/remote learning participants. If you have questions, please reach out to the teacher directly. Teacher contact information is hosted on Woodrow's DISD website.

Virtual Parent Conferences and Title I Presentation

We will also host our Virtual Parent Conference on October 12. Mr. Moran will present Title I information from 5-5:30 p.m. and then teachers will be available via Zoom from 5:30-8 p.m. for short, individual conferencing. More information about how to connect with teachers for this event will be shared later in the week. We will follow the same process being used by JL Long for its conferences being held this week. As always, to schedule longer conferences or teacher meetings, please reach out to them directly.

To stay current on all events, please visit the PTA Website and calendar.

Thank you. We look forward to seeing all in-person students with the last names A-L on October 5.

APPROVED BACKPACKS

If your student is returning to campus, please note the update regarding backpacks.

Students will be required to bring a mesh or clear backpack. If one cannot be obtained, students must notify their corresponding grade-level counselors (and/or PPE teacher) and a bag will be acquired for them. Students' items will be placed in a clear bag and the original backpack will be held in the main office with the student's name and ID number. (It is permissible for ladies to bring a private, small makeup bag or small flat pencil bag for required toiletries.) Students are encouraged to only bring necessary items, and leave trinkets or other unnecessary items at home.
