This is a big week at Woodrow. Common Assessment #2 window closes and STAAR re-testing begins on Tuesday. Seniors will have a chance to have individual pictures taken. Swim will compete in the annual Battle for the Paddle and football begins playoffs at Forester on Thursday at 7 p.m. Progress Reports will also be mailed out. Please remember that in order to earn credit students need a semester grade of a 70 and have been in attendance 90% of the time. Continue to stay in contact with teachers and counselors about your student’s needs. Thank you for partnering with us to be the exemplary school for teaching and learning.
Dallas ISD wants your opinion! Data shows the pandemic could have a devastating impact on the academic progress of students. To mitigate this learning loss and accelerate student growth, Dallas ISD is exploring three potential options for the 2021–22 school year that would add learning and enrichment time for some or all students. We are asking parents to fill out a survey on the DISD website and to attend one of the upcoming Time to Learn Parent Forums hosted by Dallas ISD trustees and share your input. You can find information about the forums and the link to the survey at www.dallasisd.org/timetolearn.
AVID APPLICATION
Advancement Via Individual Determination, AVID, is a sixth through twelfth grade program that prepares students in the academic middle for admission to a four-year college or university. Students take an AVID elective course throughout middle school and/or high school that provides them with the skills needed to be successful in advancing academically with the ultimate goal of attending college.
For more than 25 years, AVID has been instrumental in preparing students for success in higher education. The core component of the AVID Program is the AVID elective, which supports students as they challenge themselves in more rigorous classes. Students are taught study skills, note taking, time management, writing and research skills, while being immersed in a college-going culture. The class also includes tutoring sessions that are led by college students and provide support for success in the academically rigorous curriculum.
Additionally, the AVID class provides access to information about colleges and universities through field trips, guest speakers, college tutors, scholarship opportunities and college admission requirement information.
AVID recruits students who are motivated to do well and who are serious about their academic future. Based on a grade point average between 2.0 and 3.5, and average to better state test results, your child may be an ideal candidate for the AVID program. If your child is motivated and meets those requirements, please complete the application to help us better know your child and family circumstances. We will review the application, as well as space availability in the AVID classes and get back to you and/or your student promptly.
For more information and an AVID application, please reach out to Mary Margaret Gowdey, Woodrow Wilson High School’s AVID Coordinator, at mgowdey@dallasisd.org.
