Deaf Academic Team

We are a new club, yes and currently we are calling ourselves the "Woodrow Deaf Academic Team," we are trying to provide more opportunities for our deaf students and plan to expand with more opportunities next year.

Tthe Academic Bowl is purely academic based, covering the four core subjects areas (Math, Science, History and English).

Having our students attend Academic Bowls is extremely important as it gives them the opportunity to develop interpersonal skills that will benefit them long into their futures, the networking potential from the deaf community as well as college recruitment opportunities abound.  The academic competition is extremely rigorous in its format and it requires a level of discipline that stretches across all content areas, requiring our students to be more fully engaged in their education here at Woodrow.

Here are some pictures from the weekend in Colorado where our students competed as part of the Gallaudet University Academic Bowl.  This was the first time DISD ever had a team participate.  The competition is in its 20th year and we look forward to making this a tradition and bringing home a trophy In the future for Woodrow.

Students who attended:

  • Jakkisha Smith
  • Sharon Castillo
  • Ernesto Martinez
  • Bryan Castro
